Transcript for Tuesday July 11th Business Talk with Amanda

I had to post this because it was SUCH a great chat.

****************************

Welcome to the Mommy Neighborhood Business Talk, hosted by Wendy Cooper and Amanda Hamm. Shortly we will begin our session on Leaving Your Comfort Zone and Building Esteem, but in the meantime please take a few moments to introduce yourself. Also, while waiting I would like you to ponder this for a moment:
Quite often I hear people make the comment ‘I just can’t get up in front of a group to speak; it bothers me too much!’ Of course, the problem is more intense for some than for others, but remember that our attitudes, mannerisms, body language, and the voice that we use in private all go with us into public settings. Unless we speak up, persuade and convince, unless we have the power of speech, and unless we have a say in what goes on, we are not in control of our lives.
That’s an awesome thought, isn’t it?
Yet, the fear of public speaking is still the number one phobia  in America today!
First, I would like to thank all of you for joining us today. Today, just might be the first day of the rest of your life.
Just to let you know, we will be transcribing this chat for those who could not attend and for those of you who would like to take notes, which we highly recomend for implementation in latertimes.
We all have a safe haven, or a place inside of us with a voice that tells us everything is okay.We set boundaries or parameters on how close people can get to us. We know instinctively just what activities we can do with little or no effort. We have rituals which we perform in our daily lives that make us feel secure. We reserve parts of our lives from others in order to escape being judged.
These are all ways in which we stay in our comfort zone. These are actions that are familiar to us and therefore bring us a great deal of comfort and security. As long as we aren’t forced to leave our comfort zone, our pulse and blood pressure remain normal; we aren’t victims of stress, and happily–life goes on as normal.
The moment we are faced with change in our equilibrium, we begin to panic. Now we must introduce new activities and responsibilities that do not fit into our comfortable lifestyle. The old issues of doubt, fear and procrastination begin to surface. Immediately we fear our ability to succeed, and doubt that we could, even
if we tried. So what do we do? We retreat–we simply put things off, and in some instances we do nothing at all. In order to make ourselves feel better about our behavior, we rely on our excuses. Better yet, we lie to ourselves to give credence to the fact that we are procrastinating. How can we move past this debilitating
behavior? It is imperative that we institute change.
Ways that You can change your comfort levels and build your self esteem.
-Make small change
When practicing self motivation, it can be common that you get a lot of different type of mood swings. Sometimes you’ll be on a real high on the idea of who you can be and set up to change yourself overnight. Then your old habits will pull you back to who you use to be and then you become demoralized. You have eventually accept the idea that great things are created slowly. Great painting, great building. So why
can’t you see that great people are also created slowly. So if you willing to see yourself as a masterpiece in progress, then you’ll love small changes. You’ll be excited by a tiny thing you did differently today. You should celebrate because your moving in the direction of self creation.
Q: what is self-creation?
A: Self creation is what you vow to do to change the way you think and act.
Comments:
-wow…i never thought of myself in that way.
-thats a really good insight.. in personal and business
-we’re so hard on ourselves and being wahm’s we tend to even put more pressure on ourselves
-and many times we deny ourselves the right to be “real”
-yeah it takes some pressure off..we dont need to get things done so fast..we can take our time and
do it right
-we should all celebrate the small changes we make
-we pressure ourselves to take on more then what we know we can handle, which effects our business and family
-Look inside
Most of us wait to discover who we are from the impressions we get from other people. “Oh do you think I’m like that…” If we get positive feedback, that’s great. It helps build us up. But ideally, your journey should be internal. Travel deeper and deeper inside to find out your own potential. Your potential is your true identity. It only waits for self motivation to come alive
Comments:
*This plays into the pushy business woman.I know all of you have had those thoughts that everyone is going to think that you are to pushy and that you can’t pass out one more business card
or you can’t do another dinner party because everyone is tired of hearing you talk about your business.
*Always looking for approval and acceptance when we really would be happier if we we approved of ourselves
an accepted ourselves, mistakes and all
*that is hard to do..cause we are our toughest judges
-Create your own voice
You can create your own voice by practicing. Use audio cassettes in your car and sing out loud, even when you don’t feel like singing. Practice. Force your practice. The point is don’t let your feelings ruin your life. Keep thinking. Strategy. Plan. You can create anything you want. You can even create your own voice
Comments:
*Never be affraid to speak. Your voice is the most powerful thing that YOU own!
*the more you use it the more comfortable you will become
*Society will talk over you, if you do not learn or know how to carry your voice with a good tone and confidence.
*then they will sound normal to you and you won’t hesitate saying them to a potential client
-Leave your friends
Stay away from soul call friends who don’t support your goals. When you’re in a conversion with a pessimists possibilities seems to have a way of disappearing and a sense of cynicism. Remember, cynics do not create. Everyone knows that enthusiasm is contagious. And being in a conversation with an optimist opens us up to
more and more of life’s possibilities
Comments:
*don’t talk to people about your business if they don’t support your business, don’t talk to them about your goals just so they can play on your weaknesses and this includes family too! Most of them know you well enough to push buttons! Don’t let them.
*You must suround yourself with positive influences!
*Yes.. try and establish a group of other wahms that will support you in your endeavors
-Leave high school
In high school we become fearing about what others think of us. Our mission in life became not being embarrassed. We were afraid to look bad, so we made a point not to take risks. Most people designed their entire lives based on what other people think of them. But we can leave that habit behind.
Emerson: “Why should the way I feel depend on the thought in someone else’s head.
Comments:
*yes we learn early to stifle our risk taking.
*Taking risks is worth is if you learned something or got ahead because of it.
-Buy yourself flowers
And every time you look at them, let them remind you of how colorful your future is
going to be. How fresh your thoughts are. How easy it is to honor yourself. How much power you have to make your environment beautiful. And how sweet the smell of the universe can be.
